New Method for Isotopic Ratio Measurements of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Using a 4.3 μm Pulsed Quantum Cascade Laser

چکیده
We present a new approach to the measurement of stable isotopic ratios of carbon dioxide using a near room temperature pulsed quantum cascade laser and a spectral ratio method based upon dual multiple pass absorption cells. The spectral ratio method improves precision and accuracy by reducing sensitivity to variations in the laser tuning rate, power and line width. The laser is scanned across three spectral lines (near 2310 cm) quantifying three CO2 isotopologues: CO2, CO2 and COO. Isotopic ratios are determined simultaneously with a precision of 0.2 δ for each ratio with a one second measurement. Signal averaging for 400 seconds improves the precision to better than 0.03 δ for both isotopic ratios (R and R). Long term accuracy of 0.2 to 0.3 δ is demonstrated with replicate measurements of the same sample over a one month period. The fast time response of this instrument is suitable for eddy flux measurements. PACS classification codes: 07.57.Ty; 42.62.Fi; 92.70.Cp; 91.67.Rx

Development of a compact quantum cascade laser spectrometer for field measurements of CO2 isotopes
We report the development of a field-deployable, pulsed quantum cascade laser spectrometer. The instrument is designed to measure the 13C/12C isotopic ratio in the CO2 released from volcanic vents. Specific CO2 and CO2 absorption lines were selected around 4.3 μm, where the P-branch of CO2 overlaps the R-branch of CO2 of the 0001–0000 vibrational transition. This particular selection makes the ...

We describe a prototype instrument using a Peltier cooled quantum cascade laser for precise measurement of stable carbon (C/C) isotopologue ratios in atmospheric CO2. Using novel optics and signal processing techniques in a compact instrument, we are able to detect the difference between sample and reference with a precision of 0.1‰ (2σ std error of mean of 11 samples) in 10 minutes of analysis...
متن کاملFeasibility of 13CO2 eddy covariance flux measurements using pulsed quantum cascade tunable infrared laser differential absorb
Better quantification of atmosphere-ecosystem exchange of the isotopologues of CO2 could substantially improve our ability to probe underlying physiological and ecological mechanisms controlling ecosystem carbon exchange, but the ability to make long-term continuous measurements of the isotopic composition of exchange fluxes has been limited by measurement difficulties. Quantum cascade (QC) las...
متن کاملInfluence of shielding gas composition on weld profile in pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding of low carbon steel
Weld area and weld depth/width ratio can be considered to be of the most important geometrical factors in pulsed laser welding. The effects of carbon dioxide and oxygen additions to the argon shielding gas on the weld properties in pulsed laser welding of low carbon steel is investigated. Presence of carbon dioxide and oxygen up to 10 and 15 percent respectively decreases the weld geometrical f...
متن کاملInfluence of shielding gas composition on weld structure in pulsed Nd: YAG laser welding
This work studied the effect of additions of carbon dioxide to argon shielding gas on the weld shape and microstructure of ST14 steel in pulsed Nd: YAG laser welding. By additions of carbon dioxide up to 15%,the weld area and depth/width ratio decreases while rising of carbon dioxide up to 25% causes increasing of weld area and depth/width ratio. It is observed that the weld metal microstructur...
